Macedon Ranges council steps up Campaspe River trail plan

Kyneton’s Campaspe River walking trail is getting an upgrade.

The kilometre-long gravel path will be upgraded to a 2.5 metre-wide concrete path from Piper Street to the end of Wedge Street.

Macedon Ranges council said the work will make the trail more suitable for the community, including walkers, runners, cyclists and people pushing prams.

It will also increase accessibility for people using wheelchairs or walking frames.

The new path will mainly follow the original route, but in some locations it has had to deviate for environmental, engineering or safety reasons.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the upgraded trail would be a great benefit to locals and visitors.

“The riverside trail is one of Kyneton’s greatest assets and plays an important part in providing a recreation area for residents and tourists,” she said.

“Walking is an exercise which has the highest participation levels in the community and the health benefits associated with walking and other physical activities are immense.”

The work is funded by the council and the state government, with the council contributing $200,000 and the government providing $300,000 from the Regional Infrastructure Fund and $50,000 from the Transport Investing in Regions Fund.

The upgrade is expected to be completed by July.

The council is also working with the Campaspe River and Land Management Group to explore the possibility of installing outdoor exercise equipment next to the new path.
