A new supermarket and shop in Romsey has been conditionally approved by Macedon Ranges council, with a permit “subject to the formal planning process concluding”.

Council said a notice of decision to grant a planning permit was issued to Coles Group, outlining conditions to be met as part of the development including stipulations around lighting, footpaths, fencing and landscaping.

Macedon Ranges mayor Annette Death said about 2000 people moved to Romsey and surrounds between 2011 and 2021, and the proposed super market “is a welcome response to helping service that population growth”.

“Ideally it will complement the existing independent supermarket and other shops in Romsey, providing more choice for surrounding residents as well as more employment opportunities.”

Council said it had worked closely with the applicant to make sure the proposed building fits within the existing character and streetscape of the town, provides enough parking and good pedestrian access.

The applicant must now confirm they will adhere to the permit conditions, while previous submitters to the original proposal have been contacted and can raise an objection within 28 days of the notice being issued.
