Primary school pupils from across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges took home trophies at the National Water Week poster awards ceremony on Tuesday.

Fifteen of the 17 prizes on offer went to students from Braemar College in Woodend, Goonawarra, Killara and St Anne’s primary schools in Sunbury, and Gisborne and St Brigid’s primary schools in Gisborne.

Greater Western Water (GWW) applauded the pupils’ creative talents, including two from Gisborne who progressed to take out top Victorian honours for their poster designs.

GWW strategy and partnerships general manager Kessie Thomson said there was an excellent standard of entries – 1018 all together with interpretations of this year’s theme, ‘Our Water Stories’.

“Reflecting on the importance of water and how it has shaped our history beginning with the First Nations people is vital,” she said.

“It’s inspiring to see the students use art to demonstrate their understanding of the precious resource and the critical need to protect it.”

The school prize, sponsored by Southern Rural Water, was awarded to St Brigid’s for their significant contribution to the competition.

GWW said the $500 prize will go towards a sustainable project of the school’s choosing.
