Sunbury and Macedon Ranges kids are putting their best feet forward for VicHealth’s Walk to School campaign.

During October, primary school pupils are decorating their shoes, bikes and scooters to make a colourful impression on their way to and from school.

Gisborne Primary School is taking the health promotion to the next level by adding the fun of crazy socks and stockings.

Malmsbury Primary School, Lancefield’s St Mary’s School, Sunbury Heights Primary School and Sunbury West Primary School are also bringing colour to school routes.

In its 12th year, the statewide Walk to School program encourages children to become more active.

The number of Victorian kids walking to school has significantly declined according to VicHealth.

It says almost 50 per cent of children walked to school in the 1970s, compared to just 20 per cent in 2011.

As children in rural areas have greater barriers to walking to school, the organisation encourages parents to park a few blocks from school to incorporate some exercise into the daily commute.
