Local government puts out call for women to stand for council

The call is out for women interested in standing for council to step up and learn the ins and outs of local government.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council and the Victorian Local Governance Association will host the GoWomenLG2016 forum at Kyneton this Thursday.

The forum is aimed at encouraging and informing women with a view to increasing female representation in local government across Victoria.

Current and former female councillors will form a panel to discuss what’s involved in being a councillor and the resources available to assist candidates.

Macedon Ranges councillor Jennifer Anderson urged more women to get involved in local politics.

“These forums are intended to inform and educate, and provide a launch pad for women into their journey as a candidate,” Cr Anderson said.

“We know it’s important for candidates to discuss their ideas and plans with friends and family, and build a support network.

“This forum will help them with ideas and strategies to do that. It’s an opportunity to discuss the role of local government and why it’s important for women with applicable workplace, committee or governance skills to participate.

“You may be surprised what skills gained in areas outside local government translate well into the council setting.”
