Lions hunt new members

Woodend Lions are on the lookout for new members to join the club.

President Barry McDonald said the club has recently had some members step down, and they’re looking for fresh members to help run the many community events and initiatives the Lions take care of around town.

“We meet once a month, and usually that’s informal, sitting in a restaurant in Woodend and basically sitting, having a chat, no formal meeting and we’re working out what we’ll do next, who will be there and how we spend the money,” he said.

The events they run include the annual art show, which celebrated its 50th year in March, the Community Market, which runs parallel to the Woodend Farmer’s Market every month, and the Second-Chance Art Show which runs in October. They also run Christmas Carols in Woodend.

Recently, the Lions have donated $20,000 into the local community, including purchasing swags for Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health to help support the homeless population, as well as the purchase of a defibrillator and first-aid kit for the community project Woodend Lifestyle Carers.

“I often say that people really do sing the praises of the community here, but community is made by people who actually invest some time, add to the effort,” Mr McDonald said.

“It’s all really good for celebrating it, but it’s really better to actually do something active, and it is in its own way, (the Lions) is a social activity, you’re doing it with a group of people and you get to know your community better … so either for people who are moving to the town or people who are just retired, it gives them something that really focuses (on the community).”
