Workers are back on site at the Gap Road level crossing removal project following the two-week shutdown of the construction industry.
Star Weekly reported in late September that the works had been put on hold after construction workers protested a new policy of vaccine mandates for workers.
But the project is now back on track, with workers returning to the site to begin the development’s major construction elements.
Workers will begin using 110-tonne piling rigs to dig 13 metres into the ground to support the new rail bridge and retaining walls.
The retaining walls will support the road which will run beneath the existing train line.
Construction of the new rail bridge will begin in 2022, followed by an excavation of the roadway.
All workers on site are required to have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccination and a COVID Marshal will be on site at all times.
According to Rail Projects Victoria data, the boom gates in place at Gap Road are down for up to 26 per cent of each morning’s peak hour traffic run.
Sunbury MP Josh Bull said he was glad to see the works progressing in a COVIDSafe manner.
“Our growing community will see the benefits for years to come from the many transport projects underway or about to begin as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s investment in Sunbury’s future, as we get traffic flowing in Sunbury and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians,”Mr Bull said.
