Labor promises sports funding

Sunbury Recreation Reserve players and members can look forward to new amenities if a Labor government is elected on Saturday.

Labor is promising to deliver $90,000 towards upgrading lighting at the reserve’s netball court and providing air-conditioning in the indoor stadium.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell was at the reserve last Wednesday to make the announcement.

He said the investment would help the reserve provide clubs with important facilities.

“Not only will this investment improve our community infrastructure and promote a more active lifestyle, these clubs are grassroots organisations that help bring our community together,” he said.

“Projects like this help build our community.

“I am proud to have advocated and secured funding for better facilities and spaces that everyone will be able to use and enjoy.”

The lighting upgrade is expected to allow for an expanded competition in Sunbury. The Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club extended to 26 teams last year, including both male an female teams.

Tenants of the stadium include the Sunbury and District Table Tennis Association, which operates 12 tables and provides year-round competition for players of all ages and abilities.

Opposition sports spokesman senator Don Farrell said investing in sport venues was crucial to encourage people to exercise.

“Whether they dream of playing in the AFL, AFLW or super netball, or just want to enjoy the health benefits of physical activity and social bonds that come with being part of a community sporting club, we want to give all Australians the chance to enjoy sport,” he said.

“Our investments in local sporting facilities like these help clubs and communities build capacity to meet the welcome growth in female participation in club sport and support more Australians to live active, healthy lifestyles.”
