Nic Hanna of Kyneton’s Country Fire Authority (CFA) was stoked to compete against and beat the Chief Officer’s Chargers at the State Firefighter Championships on Saturday, March 26.
The 17-year-old Kyneton resident participated alongside his under-17 brigade members Sam Foster, Royce Sharp and Spencer Zan at the State Urban Senior Championships in Shepparton.
The Kyneton under-17 juniors won the opportunity to battle against CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan and three of his deputies after winning a competition at the junior championships the weekend before.
“It felt really good to have the honour to compete against the chief officers of the CFA, and to be able to do that with the team… it was really quite great,” Nic said.
The race involved obstacles attaching and detaching hydrants, fireplugs and hoses to blast water onto discs.
Nic said he wanted to thank their coaches, Emma and Brett Magrath, for all their efforts getting their team ready.
“They both worked tirelessly every week to come train us, to support us getting down there, sometimes travelling up to Swan Hill, Mooroopna, and that’s all looked after by Brett and Emma and the brigade,” Nic said.
The youngster said he felt proud to be a part of the CFA, because it was a great pathway into becoming a brigade member, which can lead to becoming a firefighter.
“I love it because it’s a place where everyone works together,” Nic said.
“It’s been a really fun experience over the last few years for me, being able to meet with these people every week.”
