Kismet Park Primary School pupils dressed to impress to celebrate Book Week.
School learning specialist Caitriona Goldsworthy said the prep and year 1 and 2 pupils were treated to a special author talk from Hazel Edwards.
“Hazel wrote the Hippopotamus On My Roof series and she was excellent,” she said.
“She had the kids up and moving and imagining themselves as characters. She was teaching them how you can’t just write about a character – you’ve got to talk about a character through more than just their appearance.”
Pupils and teachers ended their week-long festivities with a Book Week parade, with pupils dressing up as their favourite characters.
“Because reading is my secret power, all the staff came as some sort of superhero,” Ms Goldsworthy said.
“The kids dressed in anything they liked. The teachers pushed for the kids to not just dress in onesies. We also asked the community, so little brothers and sisters, to come along to the parade. Every grade did a tour and the school captains stood in the centre and judged every grade.”
Ms Goldsworthy said Book Week was a great way to implement a different style of learning.
“We still teach what we normally teach for reading, but it’s the fact that we are embracing these books and making it much more of a community event. The kids certainly embraced it.”
