Hume budget brings parking relief for narrow Sunbury streets

Indented parking bays will be created in two of Sunbury’s narrowest streets as part of Hume council’s 2018-19 budget.

Councillors adopted the budget last Monday, after adding $100,000 to the annual Indented Parking on Narrow Street Program, bringing its total funding to $500,000 for 2018-19.

As part of the program, Sunbury’s Grey and McGeorge courts will have indented parking bays created on nature strips at a cost of $22,000 and $34,000 respectively.

The council launched the Indented Parking on Narrow Street Program in 2016, after years of complaints by residents who have copped fines for parking on nature strips in streets that are too narrow for two cars to park.

The budget also includes $5.66 million to continue building the $19 million global learning centre in Sunbury, as well as another $1.32 million to build the centre’s carpark.

The council also allocated $4.12 million towards the master plan for Sunbury’s John McMahon Reserve, and $400,000 to start work on the $1 million redevelopment of Galaxyland Regional Playspace.

Money will also be spent on a pavilion at Eric Boardman Memorial Reserve, as part of an  $18 million plan to build and upgrade sporting pavilions over four years.

However, the Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club’s request for $120,000 to upgrade its netball court was not granted.

The club made a submission to the budget last month, saying its current single court was inadequate.

In a report to last Monday’s council meeting, council officers said the upgrade would not be funded in the budget but could be considered as part of its Outdoor Sports Plan in December.
