Former professional basketballer Remi Yusuf, from Houston, Texas, joined about 30 Sunbury residents to shoot some hoops last week.
Yusuf came to Sunbury’s Boardman Stadium to host a free basketball clinic for people with disabilities as part of his not-for-profit Be a 9th Wonder Foundation.
Joanne Randall, manager of Sunbury disability service provider Distinctive Options, co-ordinated the session and described it as “brilliant”.
“Everyone just had an amazing day – the smiles on their faces said it all,” she said.
Ms Randall said Yusuf had mentored her son, Gisborne’s James Cimbaljevic, who is on a basketball scholarship in the US.
Ms Randall accommodated Yusuf and American trainer Jamie Barnett, who travelled especially from New York to run the clinic.
The players were joined in mentoring the participants by Cimbaljevic and Woodend’s Lukanda Tezigwa, who has also been studying in the United States on a basketball scholarship.
