Sunbury's Coby McTagert, 18, is Humes young citizen of the year

Hume’s Young Citizen of the Year has had her sights set on a career in medicine for as long as she can remember.

Sunbury teen Coby Elyse McTaggart says she was “very excited and very honored” to receive her award at Hume council’s Australia Day ceremony in Craigieburn last week.

The recent VCE graduate volunteers with St John Ambulance Australia, which sparked an interest in medicine.

Now the youngster is about to embark on a double degree in nursing and paramedicine.

“I’ve been a member of St John Ambulance since I was 13 years old,” she said. “I thought I should know first aid when I was younger, and I really enjoyed it.”

Coby has also been rewarded for her leadership roles as a student at Aitken College and as a member of the Sunbury Choral Association, which involves her performing at community events and nursing homes.

Sunbury’s Carols on the Green Christmas celebration is Hume council’s Community Event of the Year.

Hume mayor Drew Jessop said Carols on the Green had been a massive success.

“It brought together more than 2500 people,” Cr Jessop said.

“It provided local schools and artists with an opportunity to showcase their talents, and also raised funds for local community groups, such as CareWorks SunRanges.”
