Sunbury residents are invited to vote on the theme of a new mural at the Jacksons Creek bridge, following artist expressions of interest calls from Major Road Projects Victoria.

The local search is underway to find a Sunbury-based artist or artist team to create artwork for the retaining wall alongside the bridge that will reflect Sunbury’s significance to the community.

Sunbury MP Josh Bull said it is important the artwork reflects the character of Sunbury and gets residents involved in the process.

“It’s enormously important that an established local artist or artist team will be enlisted to design a mural which reflects the character, journeys, and stories of our region,” Mr Bull said.

“We’re also inviting Sunbury locals to get involved by completing a survey about what things they’d like on the mural – the best way to represent Sunbury.”

This voting will close Saturday, August 5, with a final decision on the themes to be made later in the month.

Major Road Projects Victoria are also encouraging local artists to express their interest to paint the mural, with the project set to be completed and unveiled in late October 2023.

Program director Dipal Sorathia said the Sunbury Road upgrade will better connect Sunbury residents with work, education and each other.

“We’re delighted to celebrate the cultures and histories of the Sunbury community by showcasing local artwork on the retaining wall of the new Jacksons Creek bridge,” Mr Sorathia said.
