Greg Webber has sold his business, Webbers Garden Centre in Riddells Creek, after nearly 42 years at the helm.

Mr Webber opened his business to the public on August 31 1977, after reading an article on suburbs in the northwest and their expected rapid growth in population.

“It was front page on a 1976 Herald Sun newspaper saying there would be 100,000 people living in Sunbury and Melton by the year 2000,” Mr Webber said.

“These people would need gardens, would need plants.”

Mr Webber, 70, said he credited his business’s success over the years to his dedication to customer service.

“We offer superior service and are competitive on price,” Mr Webber said.

“It’s a combination of range, volume, quality, price and service.”

Mr Webber said it was time for him to step back from his beloved business and give another family the opportunity to take the store into another generation of gardeners.

He is urging all residents to continue supporting the business.

The new owners will take over from November 22.

Mr Webber plans to assist the new owners for a period of time, before “officially” retiring to travel.
