Gisborne’s Qays Moiz wins gold at Arnold Classic

Gisborne might have an up-and-coming taekwondo champion in six-year-old Qays Moiz.

The Gisborne boy took out a gold medal at the Arnold Classic 2018 in the poomse, yellow-belt competition for boys aged six to eight. Qays performed a set pattern of moves in front of the scrutiny of five judges and an audience of hundreds of spectators.

Qays’ coach, head instructor at Gisborne Taekwondo Glyn Thomas, said he was beyond impressed with his student.

“If he keeps going he’s going to be a champion – there’s no doubt about it,” Thomas said.

Thomas said the six-year-old remained “so relaxed” during his performance and picked up the form very well. Qays has been training in the martial art at Gisborne Taekwondo for a year.

His mother, Rashida, said she was “definitely very proud” of her son.
