This is the second year 15-year-old Georgia from Gisborne has been a ballkid for the Australian Open, and she describes it as an “amazing experience”.
The Salesian College student was excited to take part in the international sporting event again, seeing it as a chance to make new friendships and be a part of “some incredible matches”.
“The selection process consisted of a digital application, followed by a trial at local tennis clubs around Victoria,” she explained.
“If successful in level one trials, you would continue to the next trial which is held at the National Tennis Centre in Melbourne park. Next you would receive an email regarding your acceptance.”
She said the hardest part of being a ballkid in January was trying to concentrate in high temperatures, as well as the late nights where matches might not finish up until the wee hours of the morning – but being there was worth it.
“The most fun part is being up close with the players, the crowds and meeting other ball kids from all around Australia,” she said.
The teen said she loves the sport because its inclusive, where “no matter your age and skill, anyone can have a go”.
“I also like the friendly competition between players when matches occur,” she said.
And while being a ballkid is something she loves, she doesn’t think being a professional player is something she wants in the future.
“It involves lots of commitment and dedication, but I might like to work for Tennis Australia one day,” she said.
