Gisborne students to get new facilities

Rundown buildings at Gisborne Secondary College will receive major works valued at $500,000 as part of a state school maintenance program.

The college is one of several Sunbury and Macedon Ranges schools that will soon have better classrooms and facilities thanks to the funding boost of more than $40 million.

Principal Andrew Robertson welcomed the announcement last week.

“We have a list of maintenance needs and the money required to complete these projects is well outside our yearly budget, so this funding means a lot,” Mr Robertson said.

“It’s a substantial amount to meet the needs of a school of our size.

“The maintenance will mean a great deal … because we’d like to be able to deliver our arts and technology programs in quality facilities that encourage a positive learning environment.”

He said the funding would likely go towards an upgrade of the roof on the school’s 30-year-old performing arts centre building and an extension of the technology wing.

Education Minister James Merlino said the Planned Maintenance Program enabled schools to refurbish, demolish or replace sub-standard buildings.

“This funding boost will allow hundreds more Victorian schools to replace or upgrade buildings in poor condition so that our teachers and students have the first-rate facilities they deserve,” he said.

There are 42 new government schools and hundreds of school upgrades in the construction pipeline across Victoria following the government’s record $1.8 billion investment in school infrastructure.
