Geoff Porter elected as new Hume mayor

Hume’s new mayor is no stranger to the job – he is the first councillor to be sworn in as council leader for the third time.

After being elected by fellow councillors, Meadow Valley ward councillor Geoff Porter announced he would establish Hume as “the education precinct”.

The school teacher and lifelong Jacana resident said advocating for better education outcomes and youth employment support
were at the top of his agenda for the mayoral term.

“If Victoria is the education state, I want to see Hume become the education precinct,” he said. “It’s incredibly important for our community to have access to the infrastructure and services they need to be safe and healthy, as well as access to education and learning.”

Cr Porter said he was committed to programs and initiatives that would support local jobs and skills, especially for young people.

He also encouraged residents to be proactive about reporting graffiti, dumped rubbish and litter.

“Working together we can make a difference,” he said.

Cr Porter will take a year off his teaching job for his term as mayor, as he did during his previous terms in the role in 2009-10 and 2012-13.

Aitken Creek ward councillor Carly Moore was elected as deputy mayor. For the coming council term, Jacksons Creek Ward councillors will not hold one of the two leadership positions – Cr Ann Potter was previously deputy mayor.

But Cr Porter said he and the entire council were always very aware of the Sunbury area. He said council officers were looking into Sunbury’s infrastructure woes, such as parking.
