Galleries to explore in the west and north

Holidays are a great time to explore art in your local community. Here are a list of some of the art galleries in Melbourne’s west and north that are worth a visit this summer. If you have a whole day to spare, there are two suggested day trips at the end of this article.

Brimbank

Brimbank Community & Civic Gallery — Located in the Brimbank Community & Civic Centre in Sunshine.

Bowery Gallery — In St Albans Community Centre; contemporary focus.

Brimbank Projection Gallery — Large-scale projection wall behind the Civic Centre / Sunshine Library; shows digital/film work.

Hunt Club Community & Arts Centre Gallery — Small community gallery / foyer space in Deer Park.

Public Art in Brimbank — Several murals & public art installations around Sunshine, Taylors Lakes, etc.

Hobsons Bay

Laneway Gallery — Outdoor exhibition & projection space at Woods Street Arts Space in Laverton.

Louis Joel Gallery (Joel Gallery) — Contemporary exhibition gallery in Hobsons Bay.

Airtime — A youth-focused public-art space at Queen Street Skate Park.

Orbital — An exterior art display at Central Square, Altona Meadows.

The Outside Gallery — Large light-box displays in Paine Reserve, Newport.

The Substation — Not-for-profit arts venue in Newport with gallery / performance space.

Maribyrnong

Braybrook Community Hub Access Gallery — Local artists, community exhibitions, talks, workshops.

Living Museum of the West — A community social-history museum in Maribyrnong; very rich in cultural stories.

Maribyrnong Public Art / StreetWORKS — Lots of public art around the municipality.

Melton

CS Gallery — Located at Melton Library / Caroline Springs Blvd.

Melton Civic Centre Exhibition Space — Check the Civic Centre for rotating community exhibitions.

Melton Botanic Gardens (Art) — Public art / installations sometimes done in the gardens (e.g., “The Edge” exhibition).

Hume

Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery — At Hume Global Learning Centre in Craigieburn.

Gallery at Town Hall Broadmeadows — Hume City’s Broadmeadows town hall gallery.

Gallery at Hume Global Learning Centre (Sunbury) — Another Hume City exhibition space.

Whittlesea

Whittlesea Visual Art Collection — While there may not be a single commercial gallery, the city’s visual art collection is displayed across public spaces.

Public Art in Whittlesea — Over 90 public artworks (murals, sculptures, mosaics) throughout the municipality.

Wyndham

Wyndham Art Gallery — The key gallery in Wyndham, at the Wyndham Cultural Centre.

Suggested Day-Trip Itinerary

Option A – Western‑Brimbank Loop

Start at the Bowery Gallery in St Albans

Head to Brimbank Civic Centre Gallery in Sunshine

Then drive/walk to Louis Joel Gallery in Altona (Hobsons Bay)

End the day with a visit to Wyndham Art Gallery in Werribee

Option B – Northern‑Hume Loop

Begin in Craigieburn at the Hume Global Learning Centre gallery

Travel to Broadmeadows for the Town Hall Gallery

Optionally, extend to Sunbury to visit the gallery there (if you’re driving north-west)
