Riddells Creek Primary School pupils can soon safely learn and play outdoors.

The school last month received $25,000 to construct a permanent shade structure following a passionate campaign by the school community to have better sun protection.

The funding is part of the state government’s School Shade Grants program.

Kyneton Primary School and Elphinstone Primary School also received funding as part of the program.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the shade would be a welcome addition at the school.

“Riddells Creek Primary School students love spending time outdoors, which is why we’ve listened to the school community and taken action,” she said.

“Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer in Australia. It’s important we give our youngest Victorians the protection they need to stay sun smart.”

School parent Natasha McLean said she was thrilled the campaign to lobby for better sun protection had paid off.

“We’re so thrilled to receive this grant,” she said. “It will mean our children can play and learn safely outdoors in hot weather.”

Health Minster Jenny Mikakos said $11.8 million has been granted to Victorian schools to provide better sun protection.
