Friday night slices with a big heart

Nothing beats a Friday night pizza – especially when it delivers a boost for community wellbeing.

During the winter months, Piper Street Food Company will donate $1 from every pizza sold on Friday nights to Kyneton Caring Community’s foodbank.

Piper Street Food Company chef and owner Damian Sandercock was inspired to lend a helping hand after speaking with Kyneton Caring Community co-ordinator Kerryn Wildenburg.

“She told me that Kyneton Caring Community was feeding 1800 people a month,” Mr Sandercock said. “For a small regional town, I found this staggering.

“I thought it was incredible that such a huge part of our community was struggling. I also felt grateful that we had volunteers and organisations like Kyneton Caring Community trying to bridge this gap.”

Mr Sandercock said the Piper Street Food Company’s Friday Night Pizza events were “lovely, local night” happenings that would be enhanced by the $1 donations.

“We felt this was a simple way to raise awareness and make some small donations,” he said.

“One point Kerryn kept reiterating in our conversation was how much difference even a $20 donation could make.

“This isn’t just for food on tables … [it] might help with school books, camp supplies, uniforms.”

Mr Sandercock is hoping his Friday night generosity will encourage people to talk about organisations and services across the Macedon Ranges.

“It’s really important to know that these services are available and that there’s no stigma to accessing them,” he said.

“The more we talk about it, the more likely we are to come up with good solutions.

“We feel really lucky to live, work and raise our children in such a beautiful region with a real sense of community.”
