Forging friendships for a difference

Intereach are seeking volunteers for its aged care volunteer visitors scheme (supplied).

The aged care volunteer visitors scheme is seeking volunteers to spend time each week visiting older people in the Macedon Ranges.

Not-for-profit organisation Intereach is supporting the scheme and is calling on community members to provide one-on-one friendship and companionship to older isolated and lonely people.

Intereach co-chief executive Michelle Tai said Intereach valued all its volunteers and the impacts they made in their communities.

“Whether it’s providing companionship, social support, or assistance with day-to-day activities, volunteers have an immediate impact on the work and services we provide,” Ms Tai said.

“As people, we love to have connections [but]… unfortunately, loneliness is a sad reality in some of our towns and regions.

“We are hoping there are people out there who want to give some time to make someone’s day extra special.”

Intereach is looking to expand the visitor scheme team, with volunteers being trained, supported, and matched to older people receiving aged care services, while conducting multiple visits each year.

“At Intereach, we believe that everyone deserves to feel valued, respected, and cared for,” Ms Tai said.

“We welcome volunteers from all walks of life and will provide you with all the training and support you need to get started in this wonderful scheme where you have the choice around the time you put in.”

“We’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in volunteering with Intereach [and] we believe it’s a rewarding opportunity to positively impact your community.”
