Macedon Ranges residents have saved more than 8000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill since the introduction of the four-bin service, according to Macedon Ranges council.

In February last year, the council rolled out it’s new food organics and garden organics (FOGO) service, to allow residents to place all garden and food waste into the one bin.

According to council data, residents have saved 8492 tonnes of organic waste from landfill which has been turned into nutrient-rich compost used on farms, parks and gardens across Victoria.

Kyneton, Gisborne, Woodend, Mount Macedon, Macedon, Lancefield, Romsey and Riddells Creek residents were among the first to receive a kitchen caddy, compostable caddy lines and information parks ahead of the FOGO rollout last year.

The FOGO service will be rolled out to remaining towns and rural areas at the end of this financial year.

Affected properties will receive a letter in the post in the coming months, regarding upcoming service changes.

FOGO brought the total number of household bins to four per home, including glass-only bin (purple lid), recycling bin (yellow lid), rubbish and general bin (red) and FOGO bin (lime green lid).

Since the introduction of the glass-only bins in 2020, nearly 2000 tonnes of glass from landfill has been used in Victorian roads and construction.
