Flexiride arrives in Romsey

Woodend’s new bus service will hit the streets next week.

Flexiride buses will finally be rolled out from Monday (October 3) following a long-running campaign by residents for better public transport in the town.

Public Transport Victoria consulted the Woodend community earlier this year about the operation, costs and schedule of the service.

The service joins those established in Kyneton and Gisborne several years ago.

Woodend resident and bus campaigner Betty Barned, 86, said she was thrilled about using the new service.

“I’ve been campaigning for the last three years and had all but given up hoping for a bus service for Woodend,” Mrs Barned said.

“I stopped driving after a crash two years ago and I have a carer from the council that picks me up and takes me shopping once a week.

“It will be marvelous when the new flexiride service comes in because I won’t have to get half-price taxi fares for my medical appointments. I’ll have more independence.”

Macedon state Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the buses would provide a “demand-response service”.

“It will essentially be like a maxi-taxi with residents able to potentially ring up and book the bus to pick them up,” Ms Thomas said.

“I’m so excited to be delivering on this Andrews government election commitment.

“Not long now until this funky looking vehicle hits the streets of Woodend.

“The bus is currently getting its wheels polished and a wheelchair lift fitted – but it will be ready for its first day of work on Monday.”

Ms Thomas wants Public Transport Victoria to look into adding a service from Romsey/Lancefield to link with V/Line at Clarkefield and Sunbury.

She said an investigation should be conducted on linking a bus to the newly-added V/Line service leaving Clarkefield at 8.22am on week days.

The Woodend cash-only service costs $2.40 for a two-hour full-fare ticket or $1.20 for concession. A daily ticket costs $4.80 full fare and $2.40 concession.
