Sunbury’s Edward Jarrett has been recognised for his tireless contribution to the community.
The Sunbury resident of 44 years was honoured with a Senior Achiever Award at the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards at Government House last week.
Mr Jarrett said the recognition was unexpected.
“I just do what I do because I want to do it,” he said.
The former Goonawarra Golf Club president was instrumental in the creation of the Veterans Golf Classic competition, which encourages seniors to play golf in a friendly environment, and has raised more than $200,000 for various charities.
Mr Jarrett said he began the competition 22 years ago when he was Goonawarra Golf Club president. “At that point in time I saw a need for a lot of older people to get more active in sport,” he said.
He said that along with a couple of other people he formed a club called Hume Veterans Golf Club, which went on to run the Veterans Golf Classic.
Mr Jarrett said the competition for people who are 55 years and over began with just 36 participants in the first year, then grew to become an entity at 25 clubs across Victoria.
Each competition raises funds for various charities and projects.
The Veterans Golf Classic continues on today, but Mr Jarrett has stepped away from its management.
