A significant grass fire started at Bulla to the west of Melbourne Airport on Tuesday, as a result of the dry start to autumn.
The grass fire on Loemans Road started about 2.50pm and spread towards Deep Creek and Melbourne Airport.
It is believed the fire did not impact operations at Melbourne Airport.
About 50 appliances and 150 firefighters responded to the blaze at its peak, with crews battling the fire for several hours before brining it under control about 9pm.
CFA district 14 commander Michael Campbell told ABC Radio Melbourne on Wednesday morning that the fire was now within containment lines and under control, but could still produce plumes of smoke.
He said the fire took advantage of the dry conditions.
“It was a real challenge for our crews who worked hard yesterday afternoon to pull it up,” Mr Campbell said.
“It was on western side at end of one the runways, outside of the airport perimeter, which did present a lot of smoke, which would have caused concern for some of the neighbouring residents.
“We had to do some really hard work on the ground.
“It was in an inaccessible area which made it really challenging for us to manage.”
Mr Campbell said it was “hard to say” how large the fire was, but estimated it covered about 50 hectares.
He said CFA crews would work with Forest Fore Management Victoria and Fire Rescue Victoria on Wednesday to consolidate the fire.
He said there had been a “run of fires for this time of year” in Victoria, which was unexpected.
“Farmers out there would be hoping for rain but it just hasn’t come,” he said.
