Police are urging motorists to remain vigilant following a crash in Darraweit Guim earlier this month.
The female driver, aged in her 50s, was driving on Bolinda-Darraweit Road on February 2 about 8am when she fell asleep at the wheel.
She drifted on to the wrong side of the road and collided with a hardwood fence.
The vehicle ran along the fence line for about 30 metres before three fence railings entered the vehicle, narrowly missing the driver’s head.
The driver was taken to Northern Hospital in Epping by ambulance.
She suffered a sore shoulder and a minor cut to her neck. No one else was injured.
Kyneton First Constable Steve Davies said the driver “was possibly the luckiest driver in Australia”.
“She missed not one but two wooden fence posts,” Constable Davies said.
“Both posts were at head height and both were only 1-2 millimetres from impaling her.
“The force of the accident was so extreme it pushed the fence posts through the window, out the rear sheet-metal of the utility.
“The driver was extremely lucky there were no passengers as they would have been impaled.”
Constable Davies urged drivers to take great care.
“Pull over and take adequate power naps when driving to ensure your safe arrival,” he said.
“Police will be charging drivers who endanger themselves or other drivers when they have an accident due to fatigue or carelessness.”
The driver will be charged with careless driving.
