Hume council is standing with the community in it’s fight to stop toxic soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project being dumped in Bulla.

The council released an online statement earlier this month, saying it does not support PFAS and asbestos-contaminated soil from the tunnel project being dumped at the Sunbury Eco-Hub in Bulla.

“We cannot believe that the Victorian government still appears to be seriously considering Bulla as an option,” the statement read.

“This site in Bulla is in close proximity to the recently approved residential development by the Victorian government in Sunbury South and to Emu Creek.

“It makes no sense to dump spoil in this area.”

Earlier this month, the Environment Protection Authority approved waste management and recycling company Hi-Quality’s second Environment Management Plan (EMP).

The decision paves the way for Hi-Quality to toxic soil at the Sunbury Eco-Hub.

The company’s original EMP was approved in September. However, Hi-Quality was invited by the EPA to resubmit an EMP in December, after a legal review into the regulator’s process resulted in all tenderers’ EMP approvals being revoked.

“Since this proposal was first raised, Hume council has strongly and comprehensively advocated to our local member of parliament Josh Bull, the Minister for Planning Richard Wynne and the Victorian government to voice our concerns and to clearly stare we do not want this spoil impacting our community,” the council statement read.
