Former AFL player and coach Danielle Laidley will be heading to Kyneton on Friday, October 7, for a special Birds of a Feather lunch, an initiative of the Country LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Program and Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health.

In August this year, Laidley released her unflinching autobiography ‘Don’t Look Away: A Memoir of Identity & Acceptance’, delving into her decades-long journey to coming out as transgender in November 2020.

From her childhood as a boy growing up in the backblocks of Perth, then a teenager and young man entering footy, to becoming a father of three – she knew she was a woman no matter what her birth certificate said.

Her story is one of force, resilience and honesty – it speaks to the power of knowing your truth and finding the strength to step into the open.

As part of the quarterly LGBTIQA+ lunch at the Kyneton Bowls Club, Laidley will explore these ideas and more, talking about her firsthand experience knowing she didn’t fit into the body she was born into and the fear of being outed in the face of terrifying prejudice.

The lunch offers LGBTIQA+ people to come together, share stories and belong. Entry is free, meals and drinks are at bar prices. RSVPs are essential.
