An Australian cricketing icon helped unveil a huge new nural which puts a fresh spin on Sunbury along the new Jacksons Creek road bridge underpass.

The mural, which is a part of the Sunbury Road Upgrade, will be completed in the coming days, and reflects the heritage of the Jacksons Creek and acknowledges Sunbury as the birthplace of cricket’s legendary Ashes urn.

Australian test legend Nathan Lyon last week signed the mural in what will be a lasting tribute to cricket’s legacy in the area.

“It’s pretty amazing to have the opportunity to come down here to Sunbury, the birthplace of the Ashes back in 1882,” Lyon said.

“When you find out and read about all the information about the history of the Ashes, and I’ve been lucky enough to play in a lot of Ashes series.

“You see the importance of playing cricket, and this is obviously the birthplace of the Ashes, so it’s quite amazing to come here.”

Diggers Rest artist Ervin Molnar created the pubic work of art.

“The community wanted flora and fauna and what better way for it to be represented than to have the cockatoos, koala, you have some rainbow lorikeets,” Mr Molnar said.

“Everything that’s here in Jackson’s Creek is on the wall here. I wanted it to blend in with the surroundings.

“I’m a nature lover and from all the animals we have in North America to all the animals here, I’m a nature buff, an animal buff.

“So coming here and experiencing all the different wildlife and whatnot in this country is a great experience.”
