A $1.5 million pledge to upgrade netball courts and changerooms at Kyneton Showgrounds should the Labor Party be re-elected later this month has been welcomed by Macedon Ranges council.
“The current facilities on Mollison Street are out-of-date and present a real barrier to achieving greater participation rates,” council said.
Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said investment in local sporting facilities was important for community wellbeing.
“We want to see as many women and girls enjoying local sport because we know the potential it has to enhance both physical and mental wellbeing, so creating a positive environment and as much choice as possible is a great outcome for us,” she said.
The promised funding will support the draft Kyneton Showgrounds Master Plan, to ensure the precinct is suitable for the community now and into the future.
Eight clubs are set to benefit from upgrades at the showgrounds, including Kyneton Agricultural Society, Kyneton Horticultural Society, Kyneton & District Poultry Club, Kyneton Football Netball Club, Kyneton Cricket Club, Kyneton Little Athletics, Kyneton CFA and Kyneton Netball Association.
Council chief executive Bernie O’Sullivan said barriers, like a lack of space or necessary amenities, should not be the reason people don’t playing or don’t start in the first place.
“This proposed investment would have a really positive impact on the local community,” Mr O’Sullivan.
The draft master plan is open for community consultation until November 14.
