Council walk away from draft Rural Land Use Strategy

Macedon Ranges council walked away from its draft Rural Land Use Strategy this week, following community consultation on the document which resulted in 177 submissions.

At a meeting on Wednesday, December 14, council voted unanimously to abandon the draft plan, and noted that a state government review – the Planning for Melbourne’s Green Wedge and Strategic Agricultural Land project – and some bushfire considerations remained unresolved and potentially overlapped with some parts of council’s strategy.

Council also noted background work, research and community feedback had been captured in developing the draft strategy, which “sought to update the shire’s inaugural 2002 Rural Land Strategy”.

Mayor Annette Death thanked residents for their input and said it would inform “invaluable feedback and research for any future work”.

“We acknowledge that the strategy will no longer proceed, particularly while there is still work happening beyond our scope that could ultimately impact it going forward,” she said.

Council said any future work on rural land use and development would be progressed as a new project.
