Council buildings and street lights across Hume will transition to renewable sources of electricity by July 1.

More than 17,5000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced as part of the switch, according to the council.

Small council buildings and street lights will switch to 100 per cent GreenPower-accredited renewable energy tomorrow under new electricity supply agreements.

Larger buildings, including Hume Global Learning Centre and leisure centres, will make the switch on July 1, 2021.

GreenPower is a government managed scheme that enables Australian households and businesses to displace their electricity usage with certified renewable energy, which is added to the grid on their behalf.

Hume mayor Carly Moore said the council was proud to be making Hume more suitable for residents.

“This is an important move as part of our commitment to climate change action and reduction of greenhouse gases without our operations,” she said.

“Avoiding emissions through the purchase of renewable energy is a significant environmental contribution, equivalent to removing 4375 average Australian cars from the road.

“Entering a long-term agreement gives the council a secure supply of more affordable electricity … and supports Victoria’s growing renewable energy industry.”
