Macedon Ranges council’s draft plan that will guide policy on domestic animals in the shire is ready for public comment.
Following community consultation, council’s draft Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) was endorsed by councillors at a meeting held on November 24.
Residents were queried on their areas the policy should prioritise over its five year enforcement period.
Of the 743 residents who provided feedback, 83 per cent supported the development of off-leash dog parks.
Surveyed residents also indicated that their greatest concern was dog feces not being picked up in public places.
Council’s document identified a need for more dog friendly infrastructure and services for lost pets.
Macedon Ranges council mayor Jennifer Anderson said council was seeking further feedback to finalise the plan.
“We value pets and the role they play in the community but owning a cat or dog comes with responsibilities to ensure the safety of your pet and the community, and to protect our natural environment and native wildlife,” Cr Anderson said.
“Council values community feedback and we want to hear from both animal owners, and residents without pets, to ensure the final plan balances the needs of pet owners with those of the wider community and increases the awareness of the animal management services that Council provides.”
