Macedon Ranges council has joined the federal government in calling for the prohibition of nuclear weapons.

At a meeting held on October 27, council resolved to support the government’s ratification of the United Nation Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which calls for global denuclearisation.

The motion approved by council stated that “council firmly believes that our residents have the right to live in a world free from this threat”.

Cr Annette Death said local government has an important role to play in advocating for safety in the community.

“This Treaty is seeking to comprehensively ban nuclear weapons, providing a pathway for all nations to outlaw and eliminate nuclear weapons,” Cr Death said.

“Thirty eight local councils have already passed a motion in support of the ICAN [International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons] Cities for Peace appeal and Council has received ICAN postcards from residents asking council to support this cause.”

Council introduced a new direction that council’s chief executive be notified in the event a financial investment is made into any organisation that supports nuclear proliferation.

Council is also a member of Mayors for Peace, a global initiative of more than 8000 cities calling on abolishment of nuclear arms.
