Connect with nature

Sunbury residents that are passionate about the environment are being urged to apply for Hume council’s Nature Stewards program.

The 10‑week environmental education course is designed to connect people with nature and build skills for conservation.

Delivered by the Victorian National Parks Association in partnership with Hume, Merri-bek and Moonee Valley councils as the North West Hub, Nature Stewards combines classroom learning with hands-on field trips across the three local government areas.

Council said participants in the program will gain a strong foundation in environmental knowledge and practical skills, supporting those interested in volunteering, connecting with nature or pursuing a career in the environment sector.

Participants will learn from expert trainers on topics including soils, ecosystems, flora and fauna, land management, climate, fungi, pests and geology.

Sessions also explore local natural sites and real-world examples of environmental management.

Council said the introductory course is designed for individuals with little or no formal environmental education who are interested in starting or continuing environmental volunteering, while building connections with local nature spaces and their community.

It’s also an opportunity for locals to connect with like-minded people as the sessions are conducted in a group setting.

The program runs from Saturday 21 March to Saturday 13 June, excluding public holiday weekends.

Registrations close 8 March.
