There’s a strong preference for Macedon Ranges council to purchase the former Kyneton Primary School site, according to a report by project consultants.
The report, released ahead of a much anticipated draft master plan for the future use of the Baynton Street site, was put together following extensive public consultation.
The consultants’ findings show the community is in agreement that the former school site should become the heart of Kyneton and enhance the public realm around its grounds, including the library and mechanics institute.
But the community is divided on the role of commercial use for the site. While most respondents agree the site should be centred around community use, some believe commercial/not-for-profit use of the site will be necessary for economic-viability.
While the report reveals a strong preference for Macedon Ranges council to purchase the 1.3 hectare site, it also states that the council does not have the funds allocated to buy it.
The Kyneton Primary school moved from Baynton Street last year and is being rebuilt near Kyneton Secondary College to form an education precinct.
The Baynton Street site is owned by the Department of Education.
“Conversation has set up expectation within the community without any committed funding from either state and local government to purchase the land,” the report states.
“This report could be used as an advocacy tool for state, regional and local government funding.”
Community consultation on the school site’s future use included an online survey, workshops, drop-in stalls at public events and meetings with stakeholders. A draft master plan is expected to be published for public feedback next month.
