Community kitchen marks three years

The team at Sunbury's Neighbourhood Kitchen

Volunteers at Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen served hot meals to just four people when the service started three years ago. They now feed about 170 people every Monday.

The community kitchen team at the Sunbury Neighbourhood House is inviting local residents to a Pay it Forward three-course buffet dinner on September 26 to celebrate its third birthday.

Proceeds will help pay for 10 dinners for the struggling residents who dine regularly at the Sunbury kitchen.

Organiser Marianne Williams says the dinner will give the public an opportunity to experience what the kitchen is all about.

“We started with six volunteers and four guests,” Ms Williams says.

“Three years later, we’ve become an incorporated charity organisation, with 60 registered volunteers serving about 170 guests every Monday evening.”

The kitchen provides nutritional hot meals to its guests, who otherwise may have to go without, she says.

“Many of the volunteers are just residents of Sunbury who want to help others. We have over 50 volunteers who cook, wash dishes, set tables, and transport residents to and from their homes. Some just come to have a chat.”

Diners are being asked to contribute a minimum $40 donation on the night or by direct debit.
