The George Evans Museum will stay at the Sunbury Hume Global Learning Centre.
A select few of the civic collection of over 10,000 items are currently on display at the learning centre, however a notice of motion from the previous Hume council term sought to put the full civic collection on display in a freestanding museum.
Former councillor Trevor Dance successfully put forward a motion to investigate finding a freestanding location for the George Evans Museum, possibly at the Sunbury Community Arts and Cultural Precinct opening later this year, alongside displaying the full collection at all times.
However, during the most recent council meeting on July 28, council decided to keep the collection at the learning centre.
“Ideally, we’d love to see this collection celebrated in its own dedicated freestanding museum,” Cr Kate Hamley said.
“Officers investigated 20 different locations potentially for the George Evans Museum and have recommended that the Global Learning Centre in Sunbury is currently the most suitable space and suitable future space to store, display and enhance community access to this important collection.
“I know that the preference has been for a dedicated building, and I hope that one day we can see that happen.
“Thanks to the commitment of our community, we have a significant collection of 10,000 items in our civic collection, documenting and celebrating the early history of the Sunbury and Bulla region.”
The museum display will be expanded when the Sunbury Community Arts and Cultural Precinct in Jacksons Hill opens and the current gallery space at the learning centre moves to the precinct, leaving the space at the global learning centre to exclusively focus on heritage and history exhibitions.
