Chugging into railway heaven

Sunbury’s annual model train exhibition is chugging closer and closer to transport every railway enthusiast into heaven, for a weekend filled with displays and trade stands.

The exhibition is hosted by Sunbury Model Railway Club on Saturday, October 21, from 10am to 5pm and Sunday, October 22, from 10am to 4pm at St Anne’s Hall, 101 Riddell Rd, Sunbury.

Exhibition organiser Michael Holian said the exhibition is appropriate for everyone who enjoys trains from 8 years old to 80 years old, and they are hoping to get more than 1000 over the two days.

“[The exhibition is] to show people what model trains are about and the skills you can learn from it,” he said.

“You learn carpentry, wiring, artistic skills, there’s many facets of the hobby. It’s also a multi general hobby, one that parents can pass onto their kids.”

Mr Holian said he got involved with model railways through his father and enjoys the sense of community it brings.

“I started when I was a kid and my dad was a member of the club. Over 25 years I have come up through the club and am now the treasure and exhibition organiser.

“The railway club is akin to a men’s shed. It’s the comradery and mental health benefits, everyone is happy to sit and listen if you’ve had a bad day at work.”

Mr Holian said model railway clubs in the north-west have been closing over the years, but the hobby provides important hands-on skills, especially for children.

“It’s a teaching and upskilling experience that you just don’t get in front of the screen… It’s hands-on experience and problem solving [skill building].

“Historically there used to be about 10 situated in the north-west… but we’re one of the few [clubs] that are still remaining in the northern suburbs [and have] about 50 financial members.”

At the exhibition there will be large operating layouts, displays on model construction and trade stands for every railway enthusiast.

Adult tickets are $10, child tickets are $5 and family tickets are $25, and includes ample onsite parking and a well-stocked buffet car.

The money raised will go back into the club as its main source of income.
