Sunbury parkrun are looking for volunteers ahead of national volunteer week on May 15 to May 21.

The parkrun, which takes place every Saturday at 8am was originally launched in 2017, with 311 different people volunteering to make the run possible during that time.

Since this launch, volunteer contributions have helped 2856 people complete the five kilometer course on 18257 occasions.

Volunteer event director Natalie Harrison said everyone in the community is invited to try parkrun volunteering.

“Parkrun is all about having fun in a relaxed and welcoming environment,” Ms Harrison said.

“All the volunteer roles are super simple and there are a wide variety of opportunities… we even have volunteers during the week.

“Our volunteer roster is never full and there is a role to suit everyone.”

With 470 parkruns across Australia, more than 143,000 different people volunteer at the free weekly events.

A recent national survey of almost 38,000 Australian parkrunners revealed that people who volunteer experience significant health and wellbeing benefits.

Of those involved, 93 per cent said volunteering makes them feel part of their community, while 84 per cent of people said it makes them happier.

With the 2023 theme of change makers, national volunteer week aims to recognise the contributions of volunteers around the country, while encouraging others to volunteer.
