Over the past 12 months, QSpace Kyneton has provided more than 500 counselling hours to support people in the LGBTIQA+ community, as well as their carers, in the Macedon Ranges.
QSpace Kyneton was established through a partnership between Anglicare Victoria and Drummond Street Services, working with people of all ages and from all walks of life.
The service has helped clients exploring their sexuality or gender, support those affirming their identity and given mental health support in person and via video link to reach people in remote areas.
QSpace Kyneton LGBTIQA+ family practitioner Andrew Macdonald said QSpace improved poples’ self esteem, developed their sense of identity, and reduced their depression and anxiety.
“Doing this work is a real privilege,” Mr Macdonald said.
“Making the counselling space safe for all people to talk about anything they like is so important. When clients feel less isolated and more connected because of the support QSpace has been able to provide, this is an incredible outcome.”
QSpace Kyneton also delivers education to businesses and schools aiming to becoming more inclusive in working with the queer community – they’ve now educated more than 250 teachers and support staff.
“Accessing support is simple. Once the intake team identifies your needs, you will begin your free and tailored counselling sessions (a wait time of four-six weeks usually applies),” Mr Macdonald said.
“I would encourage anyone from the LGBTIQA+ community needing support, or those close to them, to contact QSpace Kyneton for mental health assistance.”
