Cash bonus for central Sunbury

Sunbury’s town centre and its regional playspace Galaxyland will soon look more than a million dollars thanks to a state funding boost.

The Sunbury Town Centre laneway connections revitalisation project will receive a total of $875,000 in state funding which will be matched by Hume council.

Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the funding, announced last week, would help bring significant projects to life.

“Hume council will match the investment from the government’s Growing Suburbs Fund dollar for dollar – resulting in $1 million total investment in the Galaxyland playspace and $750,000 to upgrade important laneway connections in Sunbury,” Cr Porter said.

The Galaxyland redevelopment will include a range of play equipment of different types and sizes for children of all abilities.

“Students from Sunbury Primary School and Macedon Ranges Specialist School played a vital role in reimagining this treasured community destination,” Cr Porter said.

“When year 1 to year 6 students were asked to draw their ideas for the playspace they created imaginative and colourful pictures of flying foxes, giant slides, places to climb, tunnels and swings.

“Those great ideas were used by landscape architects to help develop the concept plans for the new playspace.”

This project will also include picnic and barbecue facilities, seating and shade.

Cr Porter said the community would also have its say on the latest concept plans for the new-look Galaxyland.

The Connecting the Sunbury Town Centre project aims to create a more connected shopping and business district with better laneways, pavement, tree plantings, space for street art and improved lighting.

Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who announced the funding last week, said both projects would provide vital services to the growing community.

Feedback sessions at Galaxyland are on Tuesday, October 2 between 11am-2pm and Saturday October 6 between 11am-2pm.
