Cancer links inspire relay effort

Everyone has a reason to relay, Sunbury Relay for Life chairwoman Shara Turner firmly believes.

Ms Turner, whose father John died of esophageal cancer last year, says it’s rare to meet a person who hasn’t loved someone affected by the disease. Her mother, Tamara, who will relay with her again this year, survived bowel cancer more than 20 years ago.

‘‘Unfortunately, it’s one of those diseases you can’t get away from,’’ Ms Turner says. ‘‘Everyone knows someone.’’

Ms Turner is urging Sunbury residents to support November’s fifth annual Relay for Life event.

‘‘Money raised helps Cancer Council Victoria fund research, implement prevention programs and provide support services for those affected by cancer in Sunbury,’’ she said.

More than 300 people took to the town’s Little Athletics track last year, raising $52,000 for Cancer Council Victoria.

This year’s event will include live music, a jumping castle, face-painting and a candlelight ceremony paying tribute to loved ones lost. Sunbury Relay for Life is at Boardman Reserve on November 21 and 22.
