A support program for Sunbury girls is helping young people get their lives together – but it needs help to keep up its good work.
The Girls Circle program at Goonawarra Neighbourhood House aims to build positive connections between girls, aged nine to 12 years old, who have experienced social difficulties.
Weekly activities are overseen by a youth worker, who works with the girls to improve self-esteem and body image, and assist with issues such as bullying and social media.
Manager Alfina Sinatra said the program’s primary focus is to provide structured support for girls from Sunbury and surrounds.
“The girls are referred to us through their schools,” she said.
“The group then morphs into a friendship group for them, once we’ve addressed the issues.”
Ms Sinatra said the group relied on local people, grants and fundraising to keep going.
The Girls Circle started in 2014 with help from Sunbury Lions Club and Helping Hands.
“We’ve made jewellery, done pompom-making, hair and make-up. Some generous local businesses also volunteered their time to come along to the house and provide free activities,” she said.
“We’re always on the lookout for people who might volunteer an hour of their time to come in and do something with the girls.”
Goonawarra Neighbourhood House will screen Bridget Jones’s Baby at Readings Sunbury on September 9.
