Calder Freeway shut after chemical spill

Northbound lanes on the Calder Freeway remain closed near Gisborne after a chemical spill early Thursday morning.

Traffic is being detoured onto Mount Macedon Road, Black Forest Drive and then back onto the Calder.

Gisborne CFA said brigades from Riddells Creek, Macedon, Mt Macedon, Sunbury and Bendigo were helping mop up the spill, which occurred when a tanker truck began leaking hydrochloric acid about 5.55am.

A CFA spokesman said crews would empty the tanker as soon as possible by pumping the chemical into another truck.

VicRoads advised motorists to allow extra time and expect delays.
