Braemar College students are working on a special project at the Mt Macedon Memorial Cross.
Nineteen VCE Visual Communication students will work with the Mt Macedon Memorial Cross Committee of Management to design new signage for the local war memorial that serves as a place of remembrance, honouring the dedication of Australian service people throughout history.
Under the guidance of their teacher Luke Jones, the students have engaged with a professional designer to come up with new modern and inclusive designs for signage at the Cross – Victoria’s second most visited war memorial.
This upgraded signage is made possible through the Tiny Towns Grant that was awarded to the committee.
“It is a wonderful partnership – through collaborating with Braemar College students, the Mt Macedon Memorial Cross has involved the local community in identifying design concepts that include physical and virtual elements,” said Mt Macedon Memorial Committee of Management chairman David Mann.
“Visitors from any walk of life or culture can find meaning at The Cross and the redeveloped signage is expected to enhance the experience for visitors with sight or hearing impairments by providing QR codes to link online experiences and narration.”
The design concepts students have worked on will be taken into consideration to compile the application for heritage approval that is required for new signage, with the hope new signage will be on site by the end of 2026.
Braemar teacher Mr Jones said that it was an unusual privilege for students to be able to work on such a project where they know their ideas will contribute to a project in their local community.
