There’s just five days to go before single-use plastic bags are banned at supermarkets, but shoppers shouldn’t fret – the Sunbury Boomerang Bags group has your back.

The group, which was started by locals Melyssa Edmonds and Bernadette Hetherington in February last year, has been busy sewing reusable fabric bags which are being stocked in stores around town.

Ms Edmonds said the group hoped their bags would help shoppers who are caught out by the plastic bag ban.

Woolworths stopped using single-use plastic bags in its stores, as well as at BWS last Wednesday, with Big W and Coles, and First Choice Liquor to follow suit on July 1.

And while stores will have reusable, plastic bags available for sale for 15 cents each, as well as reusable fabric bags, Ms Edmonds
said anyone who found themselves out shopping without a reusable bag can pick up a free boomerang bag.

“The bags are free to anyone who needs them. If you are caught out down the street without your green bags, you can always pop into one of our stockists to grab a bag,
she said.

The bags are available at the Sunbury Fruit Market, HomeGrown Gifts, An Apple A Day Natural Health Store and Clinic, O’Shanassy Meats, Just Planet and Board Game Goblin.

The group will host a sewing bee at Sunbury Square on Saturday, July 7, from 10am-2pm, with new members welcome.
