Better trains for Sunbury

Two bigger and more accessible trains have arrived on the Sunbury line, as part of the 70 train improvement investment for the Metro Tunnel opening.

The state government announced on November 1, the high capacity metro trains were introduced after months of testing, and can carry 20 per cent more passengers than any other train on the network.

Each train is a full carriage longer than the older models, with greater accessibility, 510 seats and a capacity to carry 1100 passengers.

The trains will run on two morning peak services from Sunbury to Flinders Street Station every weekday, providing improved safety and real time journey information to passengers.

Public and Active Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams said they are giving passengers in the western suburbs a taste of what’s to come when the Metro Tunnel opens.

“The high capacity metro trains provide a more modern, accessible and reliable service, and we’re introducing them early on the Sunbury Line,” she said.

“These trains are built bigger and better right here in Victoria, carrying more passengers and delivering a more comfortable journey.”

The trains are part of a more than $2.4 billion investment to deliver the 70 new and improved train fleet in time for the Metro Tunnel opening in 2025.

When the Metro Tunnel opens, Sunbury Line passengers will have access to five new world-class underground stations at Arden, Parkville, State Library and Town Hall on Swanston Street and Anzac on St Kilda Road.

A further 34 high capacity metro trains will complete the upgraded train fleet on the Sunbury Line for the Metro Tunnel opening.
